One of my friends has developed an amazing product that provides the best GoPro filming perspective I have ever seen. It’s perfect for speed freaks and for downhill madmen because it needs a bit of speed to start working. It’s basically a wing that is attached to your waist via an extendible pole. Your GoPro sits just below the wing and when you reach about 10kph the wing takes off and flies behind you. The result is a stable and professional 3rd person’s perspective camera angle.
I played a key role in coming up with the name GoWing and was involved with the testing of the prototype rig. On one occasion we did a speed test behind a convertible sports car and on another I used it while longboarding down Table Mountain road in Cape Town. What’s interesting to note is; once the wing is airborne you quickly forget that it’s even there. It has virtually no drag so you don’t feel it pulling at all.
With Red Bull and GoPro flooding the market with beautifully edited extreme sports footage, other brands operating in this space need to be looking desperately at ways to help their video content stand out. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see the use of the GoWing in the GoPro 4 launch video later on in the year but I wonder if another brand will jump on board before then. Check out the GoWing launch website to keep up with the product’s development and look out for the Kickstarter campaign launching soon.
