After being inspired by Brent Lindeque’s #NekNomination where he performed a Random Act of Kindness instead of downing a beer, unlike every other #NekNomination had done up until that point, our CEO and Founder, Ashton Hayes, decided he wanted to do something good for his neighbour in need.
Elizabeth Barrett is an amazing 70 year old woman whose passion is to look after underprivileged people, particularly children. Her house caught on fire on the 18th of December 2013 and she managed to save all 14 children who were staying in her home. So we decided to help out Elizabeth by leveraging off the #NekNomination craze and try raise the R42 000.00 needed to rebuild her roof.
We created a #NekNomination video that told Elizabeth’s story and ended the video by nominating the whole of South Africa to help Elizabeth by donating money towards rebuilding her roof. It was unique in that it was the first #NekNomination video that asked for donations.
We set up a website that provided an easy way for people to donate and the result was that we managed to fly past our target of R42 000.00 in only two days!
After watching the video, Andrew Levy from Johannesburg, decided to take action and made his own video where he nominated Builders Warehouse to help Elizabeth. Builders Warehouse eventually accepted the nomination and agreed to help Elizabeth rebuild her home.
We are pleased to announce that the roof was completed in March 2014! Here is Elizabeth’s grateful reaction to hearing the news about us raising the funds.
